Korean expat dating
When I first arrived in South Korea eight months ago, I never considered the dating opportunities here—or their lack thereof. I thought I would be in a location that had lots of foreigners and that I would find at least one guy who I could date. As it turns out, that is not the case. The situation in Korea is like this—the foreign guys are either in a relationship, only looking to hook up, socially awkward, or only looking for Korean women. I am also a woman of color and even in this day and age, there are still guys who will count me out based on my skin color. To make matters even worse, I live in a very small town and Seoul is three hours away. My location makes dating that much harder. Again, the guys were socially awkward. After exchanging one or two messages, the guys wanted to send me dirty pictures of themselves naked.

I never met a guy who said I want to meet this girl just to learn Korean. He has engaged in five different language exchanges, and like Kim, they have all been with young, attractive Korean women, he said. The two Americans rank among more than 22, other foreigners who work in the English-teaching industry in South Korea. And with a language-hungry population that faces pricey school costs, these opportunists say there is no shortage of eager study partners — who may or may not have purely academic intentions.
Kim and Lee say they organize their steamy study sessions through various language exchange websites, such as hanlingo. On those sites, the two bachelors connect with girls who meet their dating standards. Usually, the websites have profiles, which, crucially to Kim and Lee, include a picture. Many profiles state that in addition to language exchanges, the site members are looking for friendship or culture exchanges.
Often, they convey a desire for casual conversational meetings, rather than structured academic lessons. The vast majority of the language exchange websites are free, though a couple have deluxe options you can pay for along with standard free membership. In the eyes of many Korean men, promiscuous foreigners, exploiting the appeal of their exotic looks and culture, seduce unsuspecting Korean women only to ditch the damsels later on.

What this meant was that there were certain locals in Korea who preferred socializing with foreigners, but only as a novelty. In less politically correct terms, this typically referred to a Korean man wanting to have sex with an All-American-looking woman. Aug 1, – The dating disasters diary of an expat in Seoul, South Korea. Travel Romances, Tinder Nightmares, and Hopefully Happiness!
Updated: Sep 6, Living in South Korea as an expat can be hard, especially if you have just moved to the country and are new to its culture and language. While life in the big cities such as Seoul or Busan tends to be more welcoming to foreigners, living outside of the main cities can be especially difficult for many. Finding simple services such as house cleaning, moving services, food delivery can be a headache, even though back home these are simple services that you would normally get.
It is even harder looking for services that are more complicated, such as document apostilles, looking for kindergartens, preparing birthday parties, looking for repair services, online shopping and many more. At Wonderful, we believe in providing you with the freedom to live as you would like to live, without the constraints of cultural or language barriers. We have spent years helping expats and foreigners with hundreds of thousands of requests in Korea and would like to share our guide to the 10 top requests to make with Wonderful, when settling down in Korea.
Food Delivery. For most people travelling, food is the most important thing one must know how to get. Korea has come a long way in making it easier for foreigners to order food. However, many times the apps are in Korean, and in certain regions outside of the big cities, they simply do not deliver. Wonderful can place food orders for you, and even work with third party delivery services to order from restaurants that do not deliver.
Dating in South Korea
My Korean co-teacher once told me that she had never met a gay person. The gay scene is still quite hidden in Korea, even though this year marked the 13th Queer Culture Festival in Seoul. I recall meeting one gay guy when I was an exchange student at the Korea National University of Arts. One gay guy at an art school?!
The Lifer is someone who came to Korea or any ESL abroad job, really directly after University and found things were so good he never went home. Going beyond your comfort zone can be scary, and this guy is plenty content to not budge an inch. Why would he? He keeps getting older, and the revolving door of Koreans and Expat Women alike stay the same age! These guys are amazing because they know the best of everything. The best places to find the jobs where you get paid the highest and work the fewest hours.
